The Wild Adventures of Reading
I firmly believe there is no person on this planet who can really say they hate reading, or hate books. They may dislike a certain genre of books, or reading may not be the most enjoyable thing to them, but they truly cannot hate books or reading. At least that’s my philosophy.
As an avid reader myself, I feel like I can lend some expertise to others in search of the right thing to read. For those who are thrill seekers, I’d recommend adventure novels, like Maximum Ride by James Patterson, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, and Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. For the hopeless romantic or anyone looking for ideas to surprise their significant other, then romance is the genre of choice. In this case, I suggest The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, and Matched by Ally Condie. Of course there are many others to discover, but it’s your job to turn the page.
I’m one of those few people who read books for the simple enjoyment it gives me. Because when I read a book, I am ultimately transported into the main character’s world. I begin to experience the adventure that character is having, almost like I’m living an entirely different life. Which, I think we all can agree, is an absolutely wonderful experience.
Not only is reading for enjoyment, it’s also for a practical use. There is a reason why it’s taught to children in their early years—because they are going to need it to become mature adults and citizens. There is never a time or job where reading isn’t necessary, so people might as well use what reading skills they have to read a book that they actually like. Reading any book that is a high level can also increase a person’s intelligence and vocabulary. And let’s face it…it’s always good to sound intelligent for a resume or job interview.
As anyone can see, reading has many different uses, ranging from enjoyment to practical use. What would we ever do without it? These reasons are a major component as to why I think nobody on this planet truly hates reading, even if they say they do. And if they really believe they hate it, chances are, that one great book that fits them perfectly is still out there waiting.
