High School Students Visit Henry Doorly Zoo
The Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha is quite an attraction. The seventh graders and tenth graders at Leigh High School were able to take in some of its awesome exhibits on Wednesday, October 25 as part of a science field trip. Each class had projects prior to the visit, which allowed them to better appreciate the exotic animals once they were at the zoo.
The 10th grade is rearing small animals in the classroom and saw how the zoo exhibits their animals for public viewing. Their goal is to set up a "zoo-quality" exhibit in the school for everyone to see. The 7th graders wrote a paper about a favorite animal that could be found at the zoo and told about its biology and life history. Then during the visit they discussed if the zoo made a good representation of how the animals live in the wild.
"It was a nice way to see how the zoo keepers fed the animals. We are doing something similar like that in science class, so it was nice to see other ways to raise our animals,” sophomore Payje Rayback said.
“Fortunately, even though we visited the zoo in the last part of October, we were lucky to have had a very mild day,” science teacher and chaperone Mr. Dan Schmidt said of the visit. “Many of the students had the opportunity to see some living organisms that they would never have had the chance to see otherwise.”
This trip is an annual trip for every seventh and tenth grade class.
