Clarkson-Leigh FBLA Raises $1000 for Cancer Charities

Leigh High School FBLA Members: Front Row (L to R): Emily Loseke, Kaegan Held, Cassidy Hoffman, Alissa Kasik, Michaela Hall

There are over 100 different types of cancer. Unfortunately, many students of Leigh and Clarkson are affected in some way by this life-threatening disease.

To help raise awareness, the newly formed Clarkson-Leigh FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) held a Cancer Awareness Week October 23-26.

FBLA members organized several activities through the week.  One activity was to dress in different colors to represent various cancers. Each day was also assigned a coin for a coin drive and any money brought in would go towards Cancer Awareness.  There was a competition between all the classes and staff at Leigh and Clarkson.

On Monday the kids and staff wore pink for breast cancer and brought in pennies. Tuesday was gray for brain cancer and nickels were brought in.  Wednesday’s colors were orange and white for leukemia with dimes being the coin of the day.   Thursday gave the students a choice to dress in any color that they wanted to wear for a family or friend that has cancer, and quarters were brought in.

In total, the students and staff raised $1,093.32 for cancer awareness!

The 8th grade class was the winner with $290.40.  The 11th graders raised $243.75 and the staff raised $229.36.

Mrs Sayers, the FBLA leader from Leigh, said “I was very impressed by the student and staff participation from both schools. It’s incredible that we were able to raise over $1,000 off of a coin drive in only four days! The money raised is going to a great cause. I’m super proud of everyone who participated.”

Leigh FBLA member Emily Loseke said, “It was a great way to bring awareness to the number of people who are affected by cancer, and to see how we all came together to support the ones who are going through the struggle that is known as cancer.”
