Patriots Wrestling Competes at Districts

With the Patriot Wrestling team having a great season so far this year, they were eager to head into districts. Districts were held in Oakland on Friday, February 9th and Saturday, February 10th.

The Patriots knew their opponents from having competed against them at other times throughout the season. They knew the competition was tough, but they were ready to give it their all and battle. There was a total of 20 teams at Districts. Elkhorn Valley won districts. As a team, the Patriots finished in twelfth place.

All of the Patriots made it to day two of districts except for two. On day two, Derek Gurnsey, Tim Zimmerman, and John Langhorst made it to the heartbreak rounds on Saturday. All they had to do is win those matches and they would be state bound! Derek and Tim won their matches, but John lost a tough one.

The two Patriots that were left would now be wrestling for third or fourth place. They both won their matches and finished 3rd at districts. Derek Gurnsey and Tim Zimmerman would now be advancing to the State Wrestling Tournament!

Senior Derek Gurnsey said, “Tim and I have set a foundation for the future wrestling program, and that is the most rewarding thing I’ve done this season.”

Head Coach Tyler Reeves said, “I’m really proud of how we wrestled as a team.
We had three kids get to heartbreak round with two kids coming out finishing 3rd and going to state. We took six kids to districts and four of them almost qualified. I’m proud of the two seniors for qualifying and they deserve it.”

Good luck to Derek Gurnsey and Tim Zimmerman as they continue their seasons at the State Tournament!
