Patriot VB Defeats Howells-Dodge in 5 Sets

In a fast-paced, up-and-down match, the Clarkson-Leigh Patriots defeated the Howells-Dodge Jaguars in their season opener on August 28.  It took a total of 5 intense sets of good volleyball to get the job done!

The Patriots came out firing in the first set of the night, defeating the Jaguars 25-22.

In the second and third sets, plagued with serving and hitting errors, the Patriots fell flat, losing 21-25 and 22-25.

The Jaguars came out confident they were going to put the game away in the fourth set, but a whole new Jaguar team took the floor.  In the fourth set, the Patriots’ quick-tempo offense and sheer determination led to a 25-12 victory over the Jags.

This carried over into the fifth set where the Pats finished off the game by stomping the shell-shocked Jags 15-2.

“We came out strong in the first set, but then died a little in the next two sets,” sophomore middle blocker Cassidy Hoffman said.  “But we dominated at the end of the game. I think our hard work and extra conditioning in practice was the difference-maker at the end of the game.”

Hoffman and junior Ashlynn Novotny led the team in blocking with 2 apiece.  Senior Hannah Kasik and Novotny led the team in kills with 18 and 17 respectively.  Seniors Halee Steffensmeier and Kaegan Held each recorded 17 digs, and Held added 41 set assists.

Head Coach Rebecca Schneider said, “We came out strong and played well initially, especially the first set and half of the second set. Coming out in sets 4 and 5, we really came alive!  The girls played outstanding those two sets and it just goes to show all the hard work and dedication that they put into weights and conditioning this summer. Overall, we were very pleased with how well our girls finished.  It definitely sets the bar high!”

The C team and JV both won their games as well. The C team won in 3 sets, and JV in 2. Madisyn Pelan had and Mckenna Stodola led the C team in kills, and in JV, Kayden Schumacher, Reagan Settje, and Kim Stodola led the group with the most kills.
