Patriots Finish Runner-Up at Tourney

Hannah Kasik and Cassidy Hoffman go up for a block against David City Aquinas.

The Patriot volleyball team took 2nd at their annual volleyball tournament held at Clarkson. The tournament on Saturday, September 29, 2018, was full of competition and the Patriots played to win.

The Patriots started off their day playing Cross County. Cross County took the first set away from the Patriots, but that didn’t stop them. Clarkson-Leigh played with determination and took the last two sets.

In their second match, the Patriots played Chambers-Wheeler Central. CWC were no match for the Patriots. The Patriots took the game in two to head to the championship.

The championship match was against David City Aquinas. The game was intense and the Patriots continued to battle. Clarkson-Leigh won the first set, but just couldn’t pull it off and Aquinas took away the last two sets from them. The Patriots took 2nd and lost to a strong C1 team.

Senior Hannah Kasik said, “Our tournament always has tough competition. We knew going into it that we would have to play some of our best volleyball and we did. We came out with lots of energy that almost made it seem effortless. The championship game was lots of fun, but unfortunately, we fell short a few points. Losses like that are always hard to accept, but it makes me excited to see how well we are capable of performing.”

Head Coach Becky Schneider also asserted, “Saturday's tournament was a very successful day for us despite placing 2nd. Losing that 3rd set to Aquinas in the championship match was definitely heartbreaking, especially after leading 22-18. At that point, it should be game over and we need to be able to finish. However, that tough loss does not define the success we had overall. This year, the competitive level was the best it's been and we rose to the challenge and played our best games of the season. The whole day, we played at such a high energy level that we feel we carried most of the momentum every match. Aggressive serving, great passing and defense, and smooth movements across the net definitely helped in our success in getting 2nd place.”
