Science Classes Visit Zoo

Sophomores Trevor Zulkoski and Jose Aguirre are pictured with high school science teacher Mr. Dan Schmidt at the Henry Doorly Zoo.

On October 3, the students from the Biology and Advanced Biology classes visited the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha.

Prior to the visit the students had picked a species of animal to study and write a report on. They researched the life history of their species before the visit so that they were familiar with all the environmental factors that their animals needed in order to live and thrive in.

At the zoo, students needed to find the exhibits that contained their animal choice and then made comparisons on how the zoo tried to mimic the animal’s natural habitat.

After the visit, back at Leigh, the students put all their information together in order to illustrate how a zoo can keep organisms from wildly different environments all in one place, namely Nebraska. Many of the habitats were highly modified but still performed well because of the attention to certain details that were of great importance to the health and well-being of the particular organisms.

The students were also able to see a much wider variety of animal life then they would in Leigh. The Henry Doorly Zoo has exhibits for most of the major biomes of the world and offers an opportunity for a glimpse into  these exotic locales without having to leave the state. Everyone agreed the visit to the zoo was a great success.
