Leigh Places Fifth At UNL Math Day
On an early Thursday morning on November 16, six high school students embarked to Lincoln for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Math Day. Seniors Holly Kuhr, Kaegan Held, and Logan Becher; junior Reagan Settje; and sophomores Cassidy Hoffman and Emily Loseke competed against students from across the state in a math competition.
Out of 19 schools competing in Class D, the Leigh team earned 5th place!
They attended an opening ceremony and then took a test that consisted of 25 questions. Overall, they did very well on their tests. From Leigh, the top-ranking student on the team was Reagan Settje. Placing second was Cassidy Hoffman.
After the tests they participated in a math quiz bowl. They played four total rounds and won two and lost two.
Jay Knaak, the math teacher at Leigh, sponsored the students on the trip.
“I was pleased with the effort and quality of the work the students showed in taking the UNL Math Day-Probe 1 test. Placing 5th out of 19 teams in our class was an awesome job. We also did well in the Quiz Bowl portion of the day, going 2-2. We were slow on the button sometimes and not sure if we had the right answer and most times we did. This is the first time in three years that we have attended Math Day and took some younger students to get experience for coming years.”
Cassidy Hoffman, a sophomore at Leigh, “Being the first time I've ever gone to this, I was surprised by how big it was and how many people were there. It was a great experience and very enjoyable even though the tests and competitions were difficult.”
