First-Ever Junior High Wrestling Team Has Success
For the first time in either school’s history, the Clarkson-Leigh Patriots now have a junior high wrestling program. The team is coached by Tony Horacek and Jorge Gomez. There are 12 wrestlers out: two 8th graders and ten 7th graders.
The team had five meets this year. On Saturday, November 17, they competed in a large meet at Howells-Dodge. They had 10 wrestlers compete that day. All of the wrestlers except for one, won at least one match. As a team, they went 19-10.
After Thanksgiving break, the wrestlers traveled to Battle Creek. The invite took place on Tuesday, November 27th.
Seventh-grader Dylan Higby, one of three wrestlers to finish first at the Howells-Dodge Invite, said, “We wrestled great and have been improving greatly throughout the tournaments.”
Head coach Tony Horacek said, “The young Patriots wrestled well at Howells-Dodge and Battle Creek. They gave a great effort and were able to make a lot of good things happen. Their high level of performance is a result and reflection of the effort and hard work they put in at practice every day. We hope to continue to work hard so we can continue to improve to the end of the season.”
