Leigh Students Participate in Nationwide “Hour of Code”

Elementary and high school students at Leigh got the chance to try their hand at computer coding and using robots during the schoolwide “Hour of Code” event on December 7.

Hour of Code is a national event that takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week that encourages schools to teach computer coding to students. The 2018 Computer Science Education Week was December 3-9, and students throughout the week learned different computer coding systems.

High school students gathered in the gym to use interactive devices, such as Sphero Balls, Merge Cubes, Ozobots, Cue Robots, Makey Makey, and an Ollie. Each student was also able to create their own Google logo using a coding website.

Sophomore Jose Aguirre hopes to pursue a career in computer science after high school.  He thought the experience was both informative and fun.

“I think the event opened a lot of students’ eyes at the large number of career options there are in the computer science and coding field,” Aguirre said.  “It was a neat experience.”

Technology Integrationist/Media Specialist Kylie Hollatz explained, “Coding is very important to include in our school system because many of the jobs in today’s world have some kind of coding in them. These jobs as of right now are not all filled. We want our students at Leigh to be future-ready. The elementary coded dance moves and the high school coded the Google search engine to go along with their Patriot Cup competitions. The coding hour was a success! I still see elementary students coding their dance to show others. Code.org is a free website for all to use, even adults.”
