Students Attend “Reid’s Story” Assembly in Stanton

The Adler's gave out free wristbands to any student who vowed to spread kindness and be a force against bullying and suicide.

3 in 10 young adults ages 10-19 have seriously contemplated suicide.

This alarming statistic was shared with the Leigh student body on December 11 by Dr. Mark Adler and his wife Joni at an assembly entitled “Reid’s Story.”

The Leigh students traveled to Stanton High School for the assembly and joined students from Stanton, Clarkson, and Winside, as well as many members of the Stanton community.

Reid Adler, the son of Ralston Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Adler, was a freshman at Ralston High School in the 2015-2016 school year. On January 7, 2016, Reid took his own life after being the victim of cyberbullying.

Dr. Mark and Joni Adler, Reid’s parents, have spoken to more than 30,000 students since that time, spreading the message of kindness and starting the #bekind movement that Leigh Community Schools is a part of.

Freshman Maddie Noonan said, “The assembly on Wednesday delivered an important message about what is going on right now and what not to do.”

Staff members at Leigh agree.

Media Specialist Kylie Hollatz said, “Reid’s Story was so powerful! It was eye opening and the gym was silent throughout the Adler Family’s message. It is so important in this digital age to know what you send out is permanent and doesn't go away.  Young kids need to know adults can help, so tell someone no matter what. The Adlers are so brave to tell their son’s story. I hope everyone there got the message of #bekind and #erasehate.”
