Patriot Girls’ BB Pulls Off A Close One
The Patriots were ready to compete as they took on the BRLD Wolverines in Clarkson on Friday night, December 7.
The JV girls and boys started off the night.
The Patriot JV girls started out strong, taking the lead 19-12 after the first half. They knew that they couldn’t lighten up for the start of the third quarter.
The girls were able to maintain their lead and come out with a win. The final score was 39-23.
The JV boys unfortunately didn’t have to same outcome. They started out with the energy they needed and were only down by 3 at the half.
The third quarter was a rough one. The Patriots didn’t score, while BRLD scored 9 points. They ended up losing the game 28-19.
The varsity girls were ready to follow up the JV win. They knew BRLD would be tough game, but they were prepared to snatch up a victory.
The Patriots didn’t get the start that they were hoping for. Baskets weren’t falling, and the BRLD offense was knocking down shots.
Senior, Kaegan Held said, “Coming into this game, we knew we were going to have to fight hard and play well. We were down at half time, but we stepped it up the second half and tied up the game.”
After the first half, the score was 15-26.
The girls knew that in order for them to come out on top, they were going to have to have more of an offensive half. The Patriots did just that. They outscored the Wolverines 19-13 in the third quarter.
The Patriots were only down by 5 heading into the final quarter, and they were able to make up those points in the fourth. The game was tied at 46 at the final buzzer to go into overtime.
“We had more offensive drive, which led us to over time. In overtime, we really buckled down on defense and made sure they didn’t get any open looks,” added Held. “This was a very big win for us and it felt good to win a tough game!!”
The final score was 52-49.
Senior, Hannah Kasik led the team with 14 points while Kaegan Held contributed 12.
Head coach, Matt Murren said, “The girls played with great energy, and we kept our composure as well fell behind but continued to battle back. It was great to see the fight and determination to scrap out a victory in overtime against a very good BRLD team.”
The Patriot boys wanted to add another win to their record as well, but unfortunately, they didn’t get the start that they hoped for against an undefeated BRLD team.
At the end of the first quarter, the boys were down 6-28. The Patriots came out with some more intensity the second quarter. They were able to hold BRLD to 18 points, but were only able to score 3. At the end of the half, the Wolverines were up 9-26.
The outcome didn’t improve after halftime, with the final score ending up 17-60 in favor of the Wolverines.
Head coach, Jeff Bachman said, “We faced a really good team and struggled against a really good team. I believe we showed some growth, and I hope to be at that level very soon.”
Senior, Daniel Beller led the team with 6 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore, Tommy McEvoy contributed 5 points and 4 rebounds.
