C-Team Competes at Wisner-Pilger

Even though the weather was cold and snowy, the Patriots C team still fearlessly made their way to Wisner for the annual Wisner- Pilger tournament. With a postponing of games from the day before, the Patriots were anxious to get out on the court.

The girls began at 10:00, starting out the day playing Wisner- Pilger. With the Gators pressing and nothing falling on offense, the Patriots were down going into the locker room at halftime. They came out with more fire but dug themselves into a hole in the beginning left the Patriots with a loss, 14-27.

Next was the boys. Just as the girls had played Wisner Pilger for their first game, the boys did as well. Starting out slow on defense led the Patriots down just as the girls had. It ended the same way, as they were too far down to get a comeback. More shots were falling in the end, but they couldn’t secure a win, losing 12-44.

Now the girls were ready to fight in their second but last game. They would be facing Bancroft-Rosalie/Lyons- Decatur. Hoping for a better outcome, they started the game off ready to fight. The first quarter was close as well as the second.

Coming out after half time with a tied ball game, the Patriots were going to need all their strength to get ahead. Although they showed tremendous effort, the Wolverines made a shot in the end and the Patriots just couldn’t come back, losing the game 29-26.

Abby Sayers, C team coach had this to say about the tournament: “The C team tournament was a good learning experience for our team.  I think we definitely played harder in the second game and played more like a team.  We have to continue to work on handling the ball, being aggressive on offense, and encouraging our teammates.  My goal for the season is to continue to get better with every game we play.”

The boys were ready for their second game. They would be playing the Stanton Mustangs. The boys started off slow in the first quarter, but then the tables turned. The Patriots had a small lead on the Mustangs throughout the whole game. It was constant back and forth. The fourth quarter came and it was extremely close up until the last minute, Patriots ahead. Unfortunately, the Mustangs made a three-pointer, putting them ahead of the Patriots by one. They fought hard but couldn’t come back, losing 28-29.

Jacob Eisenmann, a freshman at Leigh, said, “I thought this tournament helped our C team improve. If our shots would have started to fall, the games could have had a different turn out.”

The C team has two more games on the schedule and we are excited to see them play and improve.
