Speech Team Competes at Humphrey and Battle Creek

The Leigh Speech team traveled to Humphrey and Battle Creek in the past week.

 

At the Humphrey Speech meet four people attended: Alex Fischer, Aiden Miller, Holly Kuhr, and Alicia Holmberg.

 

For Extemporaneous Speaking, Alex earned a Superior Rating, Aiden earned 7th place in JV. In Poetry, Alex earned a Superior Rating again. In Serious Prose, Alicia received Excellent. In Humorous Prose, senior Holly Kuhr earned 1st place overall against very tough competition.  

 

Senior Holly Kuhr said, “It’s getting to the middle of our season and we’re doing well with getting off script and perfecting our speeches. The Humphrey Speech meet proved our hard work and I can’t wait to see how the rest of our season plays out!”

 

Speech team sponsor and coach, Mr. Volquardsen, said, “I am pleased with the growth I am seeing from our team members. I am especially proud of Holly because this was her first meet off script and she was the champion. With hard work and practice, I’m hopeful that others on the team can find that success as well."

 

At the Battle Creek Speech meet five people competed: Alex Fischer, Aiden Miller, Audie Tejkl, Holly Kuhr and Alicia Holmberg.

 

In Extemporaneous Speaking, Alex earned a Superior Rating in the varsity category. Aiden earned a 5th place metal in the JV. In Poetry, Alex earned Excellent. In Serious Prose Alicia earned a 6th place metal in the JV category. In Humorous prose Holly earned a 4th-place medal in the varsity category. Audie earned a superior rating in the JV category.

 

Freshman Audie Tejkl said, “It was a tough meet, but we did really well as a team. Nearly everyone made it to finals and all received a high rating. We still have work to do as a team before Conference, but I am confident in our abilities as a team.
