Senior Spotlight: Cort Pokorney

On September 26, 2000, John and Robin Pokorney welcomed a new gift into the world: Cort Perry Pokorney. Cort was born in Lamar, Colorado.

Cort has two siblings: Jayden, age 23, and Tyrell, age 21. Cort’s grandparents are John and Connie Pokorney of Shelby and Curtis and Bobbie Burgess of David City. The Pokorney family’s pets include a yellow lab named Drake and a house cat named Brenton.

Along with his family, Cort says the person he admires in his life is his Grandpa Curtis. He is a hard worker, he’s always been there for his family, he never gives up, and he would help anyone who asks.

Throughout high school, Cort has participated in band, FFA, football, journalism, and One Act for 4 years; and track and Quiz Bowl for 3 years. Cort’s proudest high school accomplishment was winning state One-Act his freshman and junior year and also receiving Best Actor in the state both of those years.

Cort’s future plans is to attend Northeast Community college for two years, transfer to UNL for two years, then find a job in agronomy or precision ag. He sees himself working in agriculture and starting a family in 10-15 years.

To get to know Cort a little bit more, he says the three best words to describe him are “fun, outgoing, and hard working.” His worst habit is procrastinating, and he says if he won the lottery he would give money to his parents to retire and then buy a house on a beach, one in the mountains, and a bunch of expensive toys.

On his own time Cort enjoys hunting, trapping, and fishing. And if he were to travel anywhere in the world, he would go to Alaska to go bear, wolf, and moose hunting. To describe Cort more, three goals on Cort’s bucket list that he would like to accomplish in his life is to go to Alaska, build his own house, and go deep sea fishing.

Cort has many favorites along with hunting, trapping, and fishing. His favorite TV show is Yellowstone, favorite song is “To a T” by Ryan Hurd, favorite sports team is the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and favorite food is his dad’s brisket.

When asked his favorite high school memory, Cort said, “I enjoy spending every waking minute of my week with my amazing classmates, especially Hannah Jo Kasik” (this is very sarcastic).

Cort’s advice to underclassmen is, “If life gives you lemons, squeeze the juice into a water gun and shoot other people in the eyes.”

Congratulations and good luck, Cort!
