Clarkson-Leigh Falls to Howells-Dodge in Annual Bacon Bowl

The annual “Bacon Bowl” between Clarkson-Leigh and Howells-Dodge was held on August 30, as the two Highway 91 rivals squared off in Howells at 7 pm.

Both teams got off to a good start scoring in the first quarter. Howells-Dodge scored 14 points in the first quarter off a 54-yard rush from Luke Rocheford and a 57-yard pass from Darrin Pokorny to Rocheford.

Lance Paprocki scored for the Patriots with a 2-yard rush after a 56-yard pass conversion from Lance Paprocki to Eli Hays. After a failed two-point conversion, the Patriots were left with 6 points for the first quarter.

The second quarter was basically a repeat of the first. Clarkson-Leigh scored one touchdown off a 43-yard reception from Lance Paprocki to Carter Hanel. The Patriots then converted the 2-point conversion on another pass from Paprocki to Hanel.

The Jaguars scored at the beginning of the second quarter off a 5-yard pass from Pokorny to Rocheford again. After a missed 2 point conversion, the Jaguars went up to a score of 20. Towards the end of the second quarter, Howells-Dodge scored again off a 34-yard run by Pokorny. The Jaguars missed the two-point conversion, making the score 14-26 Howells-Dodge.

Coming out of halftime, Rocheford scored for the Jaguars off a 41-yard run. Howells-Dodge also converted the two-point conversion off a pass from Pokorny to Rocheford.

Howells-Dodge scored again in the fourth quarter off a 7-yard pass from Pokorny to Rocheford. The Jaguars converted the two-point conversion on a pass from Pokorny to Rocheford as well.

The Patriots were held scoreless in the second half.

When the final buzzer sounded, Howells-Dodge beat Clarkson-Leigh 34-14, taking home the Bacon Bowl trophy.

When asked how they thought the game went, junior Trevor Zulkoski said, “The game wasn’t great, but I think we did pretty good for it being our first game. We have a lot to work on and I can’t wait to play St. Francis next.”

Coach Jim Clarkson said, “Tough night in the Bacon Bowl.  We played really well in the first half, but unfortunately, we kind of wore down in the second half.  We had a couple of opportunities that we were unable to take advantage of.

“Howells-Dodge is a really good team and ended up getting the better of us.  I was really proud of the effort that the players played with, we were underhanded a bit but not out hearted.  Hopefully we will learn from Friday night and become a better team for it.”

The Patriots play next on September 13 at home against Humphrey St. Francis.
