FFA Ag Students Attend Husker Harvest Days

Sophomore FFA students Darian Ober-Brown and Aiden Miller were two FFA students who attended Husker Harvest Days.

Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island, Nebraska, bills itself as one of the largest outdoor farm shows of its kind at the most modern site.  For the nearly 20 Leigh High School ag students who attended the event, it certainly did not disappoint!

Some members of the Leigh-Clarkson FFA Chapter attended Husker Harvest Days on Wednesday, September 11, including Morgan Voborny, Carson Ahrens, Lexi Schroeder, Natalie Reeves, Trevor Zulkoski, Riana Grotelueschen, Alissa Kasik, Zane Williams, Isaac Rodenburg, Audie Tejkl, Aiden Miller, Kanyon Held, Logan Schroeder, Jacob Eisenmann, Madison Noonan, Makenna Held, Natalie Brabec, Justine Thompson, and Darian Ober-Brown.

These students got to learn more about the advancements in agricultural technology and explore some future career choices. Many big-name companies were at Husker Harvest Days like John Deere, Case IH, Pioneer, Dekalb, AGCO, and Golden Harvest.

Many companies gave away free items to FFA members if they could answer questions about what they learned.

The FFA Chapter helped a good cause. If FFA members brought five canned food items, they would be given free entry onto the grounds.

Among the most interesting exhibits were the multiple booths featuring virtual reality goggles showing off their equipment in action. One of the more interesting booths was Yield 360, who showcased their mobile fertilizer refilling system.  As farmers are planting in the field and fertilizer is running low, the yield 360 Gator, will drive to the planter and attach the coupling unit on the rear of the planter to start refilling the tanks on the tractor.

Another new product highlight was AGCO’s new Fendt Ideal combine, which is one of the biggest and most powerful in the world. Several irrigation companies also took center stage showing off their multiple pivot towers that were running throughout the show week.

In addition to new innovations, other highlights include dog herding demonstrations, showing how dogs can be trained and utilized in the herding of livestock.

Local company Kit Held Seed and Chem even got in on the action, and was at the show donating free food and hats.

Northeast Community College was also in attendance, giving out scholarships for their ag program throughout the day on Wednesday.

FFA Advisor, Mrs. Brandy Held, is excited that Husker Harvest Days is an annual event for the FFA students.

“Husker Harvest Days is a great experience for our students,” Held said.  “They not only have the opportunity to see the various careers in agriculture, but also work on communication skills while talking to various vendor representatives.  Enhancing these skills now prepare our students for their future.”
