Patriots Take Fifth At Stanton VB Tourney

The Stanton Tournament is the first varsity tournament on the schedule each year for the Patriot volleyball team, so there is always plenty to prove and plenty at stake.

This year at the tourney, the Patriots faced off against Stanton, Crofton, and Arlington on Saturday, September 21.

The varsity volleyball players started with their first game against Stanton. The Patriots knew they had to come out strong in this game and maintain a strong pace. The first set was difficult, as they came out flat, losing 12-25. The second set saw improvement, but the Mustangs came out on top again, 18-25.

“We came out slow, which made us lose the first game to Stanton,” said junior outside hitter Kayden Schumacher.  “But we came together as a team the second and third games, so we were able to get the win, and I think we just need to start coming out ready to play” said junior Kayden Schumacher.

As Schumacher noted, they regrouped and were ready to tackle Crofton. The first set the Patriots came out strong and took the set 25-13. The next set it was more of a battle but the Patriots won 26-24. With their first win of the day, they were ready to tackle Arlington in a bid for 5th place.

Against Arlington, the Patriots came out strong in the first set, found a good pace, and kept it going throughout the second set and finished in two. Cassidy Hoffman led them with 5 kills, while Makenna Held, Kennedy Settje, Kayden Schumacher, and Alissa Kasik all had 5 digs.

“We definitely ended the day way better than how we started we the day,” Head Coach Becky Schneider said. “We finally got that rematch with Stanton, but we just couldn't perform.  We struggled with just about every aspect of the game, and it just wasn't one person; it was a team effort.  After that game, we regrouped, we talked about some things, we did some meditation, and the girls took it upon themselves to even do a team builder on their own in the locker room!  We were impressed with their intentions and something must've worked because we came out and played Arlington followed by Crofton and we played really well!  We were just really sound in those two matches, it was night and day different from the Stanton match. So we were really pleased with how we ended the day!  We have to stay focused and stay positive if we want to continue to progress and be successful!”

The Patriot season record stands at 5-5 after this tournament.
