Volleyball Finishes 2-1 in Home Tourney

Kennedy Settje looks to tip the ball over a Howells-Dodge blocker.

As homecoming week came to a close, it was time for the Patriots to show what they could do at their home tourney. On October 5th the Clarkson-Leigh Patriots hosted a varsity tourney at their home court.

To start off the day, they drew Humphrey-Lindsay as their first opponents. Ready to compete, they put up a fight against the Bulldogs. They couldn’t control simple things such as serving and taking care of the ball, and lost both sets 19-25, and 18-25.

Kim Stodola led this match with kills, having 5, and Kennedy Settje led on defense with 16 digs.

After losing the first game, they knew they would really have to fight the next two games. Their second draw was Aquinas. The Patriots started off the first set just like they had the last two against Humphrey and lost 12-25.

The second set was a quick turnaround though, resulting in a close win from the Patriots 25-22. The third set would be a battle, but the Patriots were ready to play and they took it right out from under them winning 25-13. Communication was key in the success in the last two sets of this game.

Kayden Schumacher led this match in kills with 10, and Cassidy Hoffman led in blocks with 5.

The last game of the day was against the Howells- Dodge Jaguars. The Patriots were excited to play them again as they had already lost once in the regular season.

The first set started off well for the Patriots, winning 25-20. Hoping for the second set to go the same way, they continued to fight and secured another win under their belts winning 25-18. Cassidy Hoffman led in kills with 9, and also in blocks with 4.

Cassidy Hoffman, junior at Leigh, had this to say about the tourney:

“We started the day off really slow and didn't play up to our potential, but as the day went on we played better. It felt good to beat Howells-Dodge because they are one of our rivals, and we hope to get another shot at H-LHF sometime soon. We just need to work on limiting our errors and playing aggressive.”

Becky Schneider, varsity head coach, said this about the day:

“We definitely ended the tournament better than how we started. We had a rematch with HLHF first round and we thought we'd have a different outcome than last time, however, we just didn't perform well at all.  We did not take care of the ball, we were making mistakes that we haven't been making and we did not come together when we needed too. We just gave them way too many points from errors that we could control. Playing Aquinas, we started out the same way making mental mistakes and not taking care of the ball. Middle of the second set, we won a longer rally and that was the turning point. That sparked the fire and we never looked back. We finished the day with Howells-Dodge, another much anticipated rematch. The energy from the last match carried over and we did all the little things right. We attacked, stayed aggressive, and took care of the ball.  We really came together and played as a unit! It was really good to see that we could pull together and play the way we did.”
