Clarkson-Leigh Forms First Girls’ Golf Team in Five Years

Cortlynn Cadwallader, a sophomore at Leigh, is part of the newly formed Patriot girls' golf team. The team had their first competition in Schuyler on August 26.

Clarkson-Leigh has not had a girls’ golf team since 2014 due to lack of participation.  But this year there is a team once more! Five girls have joined this year, including Cortlynn Cadwallader, a sophomore from Leigh, and Ashlynn Cropp, Mady Janousek, Ashly Guillen, and Hazel Mondt, all freshmen from Clarkson.

None of the five girls have ever golfed before joining the Patriot golf team, but saw the opportunity as the chance to learn a new skill that they can use their whole lives.

They had their first meet on Monday, August , “For all of us never golfing before we did really good as a team.”

These girls have never golfed before joining this team. They had their first meet on Monday August 26 in Schulyer. After 9 holes, Schuyler’s Varsity finished first, Clarkson-Leigh finished second, and Schuyler’s JV team finished third.

After nine holes, Ashlynn Cropp was the low score for the Patriots with 76.  Mady Janousek followed with 97. Cortlynn Cadwallader shot 112, Hazel Mondt shot 118, and Ashly Guillen shot 132.

The girls are coached by Mr. Jay Knaak.

“I thought we did well for the first meet of the year and the first competition in golf for all of the girls out this year,” Knaak said. “None of the girls had ever played golf before and showed some potential on many holes throughout the round.  It was the first time any of them had played all 9 holes in a day.  We will need to get more consistent with our hitting and putting as the season progresses.”
