FCCLA Attends District Leadership Conference

On Monday, October 14th, the Leigh-Clarkson FCCLA chapter attended District Leadership Conference. This conference is held every year at Columbus Community College. The chapter was able to have 33 members in attendance.

The day started off with donuts and juice in the gym at CCC. After a short while, the installation of District officers began. One Leigh-Clarkson member, Bailey Lemburg, was installed into her District role as Secretary. This year our chapter advisor, Mrs. Megan Hillen, was the district advisor as well.

The members then moved on to the Keynote speaker, Ferial Pearson. She is a former high-school teacher, now a college professor who started a nationwide program called Secret Kindness Agents after the shooting at Sandy Hook. When she started it, it was because of gun violence. She was a target of gun violence as a child, and now as an adult she saw the way that others were affected by it.

Her kids brought her the point that if someone had been kind to those shooters, they might not have done what they did, so Secret Kindness Agents were born. Secret Kindness Agents are kids do kind things to others at their school, but receive no recognition for it. She said that the whole point of being kind is to make another person feel better about him or herself.

Leigh-Clarkson members then participated in a yoga session, ate lunch, and watched an informational video about vaping. During lunch there was a special presentation by the Nebraska State Patrol, who brought a Seatbelt Persuader. Clarkson student Drew Beeson participated in this activity.

Leigh-Clarkson advisor, Mrs. Megan Hillen said, “District Leadership Conference is a great opportunity for our new and returning members to experience FCCLA early in the school year. The conference was packed with great speakers and our students were able to gain personal and leadership skills. It is also fun to see them network with other members from across our district.”

Members were then able to participate in different breakout sessions. There were sessions on Safe Sleep/SIDS, Safe Food for Every Body, Ba an Out of the World Leader, Positioning Yourself for College and Scholarships, End the Stigma, Running for Higher Office, FCCLA Trivia, SPOT and Student Body, Refurbishing Furniture Distracted Driving, and Bystander Intervention.

Sophomore Natalie Brabec said, “I really thought that DLC was very good this year. The keynote speaker was really good as well. The group sessions that we could choose to go to were very informative and was really good information.”

All members then returned to the gym for the closing session. There were door prizes handed out. Winners included Cassidy Hoffman, Kayden Schumacher, Cassie Rayback, and Alicia Holmberg.
