Patriot Volleyball Season Ends in Sub-Districts

After struggling in the latter half of their season, the Patriot volleyball team was handed a clean slate as the first round of sub districts began on October 28 in the Norfolk Catholic gym.

The Patriots were the #4 seed out of 5 in their sub-district, so they had to play the “bunny bracket” game against Madison to begin the night.

Just as they were hoping, the Patriots brought the heat and defeated Madison in three quick sets. Defense and serve receive led to the Patriots being able to set the ball up perfectly and bring the heat on offense. The final scores of each set were 25-13, 25-10, and 25-18.

Leading in kills was Cassidy Hoffman with 10, and in ace serves was Alissa Kasik with 5.

After winning the first game, the Patriots went on to face the Lutheran High Northeast Eagles. They knew this was going to be a tougher match, as the Eagles were the top seed in the subdistrict.

The first set started off slow with the Eagles going on a few runs. Clarkson-Leigh did not come out swinging and the opposing team was able to dig whatever was thrown at them. Not being able to come back, the Patriots lost the first set 13-25.

Coming out more fired up, the Patriots stayed with the Eagles the second set. Aggressive serving and testing the opponents’ out of system skills proved beneficial for Clarkson-Leigh. After long rallies and back-and-forth lead changes, the Eagles finally pulled away from the Patriots and defeated them in the second set with a closer score of 25-20.

In the third set the Patriots came out ready to fight harder than ever, the season being on the line. They hustled all over the court and swung with fire whenever possible. The Eagles were ready to put up their best fight as well. The Patriots couldn’t give enough and lost the third and final set of the season 19-25.

Junior Kayden Schumacher led the team with 10 kills and 20 digs.

Senior right-side hitter, Taylor Larson said, “The game didn't exactly go how we wanted it too, but we played really well as a team. I am very proud of how we played this season and will definitely miss playing with this team. I can't wait to see what next year's team can do and wish all the underclassmen the best of luck.”

Rebecca Schnieder, head coach, had this to say about her team and their season:

“Coming out, we played really well against Madison. We did the little things right and took care of the ball!  We served aggressively, and our passing was on point, so we were able to run our offense and keep attacking. It was a great way to start subs. Going up against LHNE after that was a bit of a shock. We prepared for them the best we could, and we were pretty confident that we would be able to battle with them and even play above them, but they were a whole different team from the last time we saw them. The tempo of the game was a lot faster. We struggled to get anything going on offense, and we had a hard time stopping them defensively. They were a solid team that didn't make many mistakes, and it's hard to score points against teams like that.  In the end, we can't hang our heads; the girls definitely battled all the way through and didn't give up, and we are proud of the efforts they put forth.”

The Patriots finished the season with an even 16-16 record.
