Pender Snaps Girls’ BB 8-Game Win Streak

After having a short break from basketball games for the Patriots, they finally got back at it on Tuesday, January 21, as they took on the Pender Pendragons at home.

The Patriot girls came out of the gates strong and commanded a 15-point, 29-14 lead by halftime.

But they were outscored by 10 points in the third quarter and 10 points in the fourth to lose the game 44-49.  This marked the end of an 8-game win streak for the Patriot girls.

This makes their record 10-4 after their loss.

Coach Matt Murren said, “We came out and played a tremendous first quarter, one of the best quarters we’ve played. Defensively we were active and getting stops which allowed us to get in transition. The second half we couldn’t get stops and kept putting them to the line. Credit to them for continuing to battle back into the game. We will learn from this game and it will make us a better team as we head into the most important part of the season.”

Junior Kayden Schumacher said, “Even though we were short on players, we still played really hard and battled. We started the first half with lots of energy, but we got tense in the second half and lost some of our aggressiveness. I think it was a good learning experience for us, and we are ready to work hard and get back after it. We just need to respond well after this loss.”

The Patriot boys had a much better showing.

Coach Jeff Bachman said, “After a slow offensive start, we really got going in the second half. It was a good quality win for us and a solid defensive effort.”

The Patriots outscored the Pendragons by nearly 20 points, winning the game 60-41.  Sophomore Carter Hanel had an impressive night with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Eli Hays added 17  points and 2 steals.

Freshman Kyle Kasik said, “Our first quarter went well, but we had a slump in the second and then had to improve ourselves in the second half. Overall, it was a good win. Once we can play our best throughout all four quarters, I think we’ll be pretty hard to beat.”
