A Patriot Split Between Twin River
January 23 was a big night for the Clarkson-Leigh Patriots as they took on Twin River in Clarkson.
First up was the boys’ JV’s game. It was a close game, but the Patriots came out on top with a nailbiter score of 29-28. As the girls followed, they put up a good fight as well, coming out on top, 37-21.
As the JV’s finished their games, the varsity was warmed up and ready to go. The girls played first and took the lead from the start. The 3-15 Titans were no match for the Patriot girls. The score at the end of the first half was 31-10, Patriots ahead. The girls kept fighting and took a bigger lead towards the end of the game.
The second half saw the Patriots expanding their lead. The ending score of the game was 58-25, Patriot win!
Junior, Kayden Schumacher, said, “It was a great response to our previous game against Pender. We came out fired up and ready to play. We stayed consistent the whole time and did not allow them to stay in the game. It was a confidence booster after losing to Pender the game prior.”
Girls’ head coach, Matt Murren, said, “We responded the way I knew we would. We brought the energy on the defensive end, which allowed us to get some flow on the offensive end and get some things going. I was very pleased with the way we came out and played a nice game.”
Junior, Cassidy Hoffman, contributed 13 points and 9 rebounds to the team; senior Ashlynn Novotny also contributed 9 rebounds as well.
Following the girls’ game, the boys took the floor. It was a battle for the boys, as they answered each others’ shots. The score at the end of the first half was 25-21, Patriot lead. This was a great start for the Patriots against a 10-5 Twin River team.
The third quarter saw the Patriots increase their lead to 6, but things fell apart in the fourth. The Titans took control of the game and outscored the Patriots by 13 points. By the end of the game, the Patriots saw their lead disappear, and they lost 50-58. But it was still a fun game for the crowd to watch.
Head Coach, Jeff Bachman, said, “What a fun environment and game! I was very proud of our effort and heart that we showed. We just didn't make enough plays down the stretch against a good team to beat them. This was a great learning experience and will help us in the long run.”
Sophomore, Jarred Novotny, contributed 25 points, and sophomore Carter Hanel led the way with 9 rebounds.
