FBLA - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Reduce, reuse, recycle. We hear these three words all the time, but what do we actually do to accomplish these goals?

This year, the Clarkson-Leigh FBLA chapter has taken this concept above and beyond. All of our accomplishments were group efforts, but remember: anyone can make similar efforts to improve the environment at home.

First and foremost, we established a recycling program at Leigh High School, and each week a chapter member takes out the recycling from the school kitchen. Also, our entire FBLA chapter helped clean up our parks and fire trucks. This year, our chapter cleaned the Clarkson City Park in November and washed the Leigh fire trucks in January.

Furthermore, our chapter has promised to work on specific environmental goals such as taking faster showers, turning off unnecessary lights, and recycling unwanted papers, which are simple actions anyone can do. We even posted environmental fun facts on our school bulletin board to make others aware of simple actions that can make a difference.

And like always, we always like to involve our elementary students so that they remember to reduce reuse, and recycle. This year we held a “Go Green” Coloring Page Contest. Each grade had a different coloring page to color. The grades that participated in this contest were Pre-K through 6th grade. The morning preschool winner was Aspen Kuester, the afternoon preschool winner was Bria Folken. The kindergarten winner was Presley Wietfeld, first grade was Emery Malena, second grade winner was Daisy Van Dyke. The third grade winner was Isaiah Macdonald, the fourth grade winner was Kiera Wiese, the fifth grade winner was Reese Wietfeld, and the sixth grade winner was Jocelyn Donnelly.

Also as an extra effort, our chapter held a donation drive for gently used makeup, lotion, body wash, and similar items for Center for Survivors. These items were greatly appreciated, and thank you to everyone who made this drive a success.

Not only will these projects make a positive impact on our environment and community, but they also help our FBLA chapter gain recognition at our State Leadership Conference.
