COVID-19 Leigh Community Schools Update - 4/3/20

Leigh Community Schools Mission Statement

The mission of Leigh Community Schools is to foster a positive educational culture where:  STUDENTS thrive, TEACHERS guide, ADMINISTRATORS lead, PARENTS support and the COMMUNITY is the foundation for all.  WE ARE LEIGH!

Learning Empowers Individuals to Great Heights

4-3-2020

Leigh Community Schools Students, Families and Community,

On April 1st, the Governor issued a statewide Directed Health Measure directing schools across Nebraska to not return to a normal status in the current school year.  Instead, schools should continue to operate the remainder of the year without students in the building. The Governor also mandated no extracurricular activities through May 31st.  We know this is a very sad and challenging time for our whole school staff, students, parents, and community members. We will be in contact with our Seniors on how graduation may be able to look this year.  We are very proud of our Seniors and want to celebrate their great accomplishments.

We will continue with our lunch program.  If you would like lunches for your school-age children, you may call the elementary office at 487-3301 by 9:00 a.m. Monday - Friday.  You may pick up lunches at the elementary from 11:00-12:00 or if needed, we can deliver the lunches. NO lunches will be available on April 10th or 13th as this is our scheduled break.

We will continue with our alternate learning until May 20th.  When necessary, we will be making adjustments to the process to better serve our students.

Our Preschool - 6th-grade plan for continuity of learning includes:

Preschool will provide weekly enrichment packets.  Kindergarten through 6th grade will continue enrichment packets and begin instructional packets at a later date.  Packets may be picked up each Monday between 7:45 am-12:00 pm. Packets not picked up will be delivered later in the week.    **Please note due to scheduled break, April 13th packets will be available for pick up on Tuesday, April 14th.**

The expectation for the packet is to be completed and returned to the elementary by the following Monday.  A drop off box is available outside of the elementary building. The teachers will review materials, make comments and use a pass/no harm system for any grading.

At the elementary, Zoom will be used as a communication tool and not an instructional tool.  Teachers will set up a zoom once a week for their class.

Our 7-12 grade plan for continuity of learning includes:

At the 7-12 level, we are utilizing remote learning. All students have either a Chromebook or Macbook computer. The teachers will post weekly learning objectives and assignments on Canvas or Google classroom. Those students without Internet access receive paper copies placed into packets.  The packets are distributed every Monday.

During the school closure, grading is established as pass/no harm.  If a student demonstrates proficiency on an assignment, this is noted in the grade book.  If an assignment is not submitted or fails to reach a level of basic proficiency, no grade is entered into the grade book.  College credit courses and high school online courses will continue to be graded as they were prior to the closure.

For grades 9-12, completion of assigned work during the fourth quarter is tied to earning academic credit for the second semester. Students earning a mid-term passing grade as of March 18 and successfully completing work during the school closure, will be awarded full credit for the second semester.

Each 9-12 grade teacher will have virtual office hours, via Zoom meetings, every day that school is in session.  At this time, students may communicate face-to-face with their teacher. In addition, some teachers will establish Zoom meetings once a week for specific courses.

All teachers will be available 7:50-3:50 Monday - Friday for assistance.  Teachers may be reached by email, cell phone if available or you may call the school office and leave a message.

As we continue with our new normal of constant change, please feel free to call us with any questions or concerns.  Thank you for all of your support as we move through this process.

Sincerely,
