Cyclones Clinch Second Place at Wayne Invite

By: Morgan Bunner, a freshman at Leigh High School

The softball team had one roller coaster of a day on August 22 at the Wayne Invite.

After two dominant wins and one disappointing loss, the Cyclones finished their first tournament with a 2-1 record and second place.

They started at 9:30 a.m. against Pierce Blue Jays. They were able to pull off a stunning performance, defeating them 17-4 in 3 innings.

After this they had a short break before they had to play the Arlington Eagles at 11:30. They once again fought hard to clinch a 8-1 win over them in 6 innings.

Their final game that day was against the Wayne Blue Devils at 1:30 p.m. They were unfortunately outmatched by Wayne and lost 2-6 in 5 innings.

The softball’s head coach Adam Indra said, "We played well at the Wayne Invite.  Whenever you can go into a tourney with that quality of teams and come out with a 2-1 record and 2nd place, you take it.

The pitchers did a good job of keeping hitters off balance, the defense made plays, and offensively we executed.  It was an all-around team effort.  We would of course have liked to have beaten Wayne, but at the end of the day, you gotta make more plays than your opponent, and that's what Wayne did to us."

Leigh senior Rylee Olson also felt very positive with the outcome of the tournament.

“At the Wayne tournament we played well,” Olson said. “We saw some things we do well as a team and others that we need to work on. I'm looking forward to growing with the team the rest of the season!”

This year’s team is coached by Adam Indra and assisted by Jenica Dietrich, Scott Polacek, and Tiffany Rayback.
