Cyclones Stymied in Triangular
By: Kayden Schumacher, a senior at Leigh High School
The Cyclones had a busy past couple of days, with a tournament on Saturday, a game on Monday, and a triangular on Tuesday. The Cyclones lost both of their games in a tough battle on Tuesday, September 1st. They played a triangular match against Bishop Newman and Wayne in Dodge.
Wayne and Bishop Newman are both very good teams. The Cyclones fought their hardest, but couldn’t pull off the wins.
The score of the first game against Bishop Newman was 0-7, with the Cyclones taking a loss. Despite their best efforts, the Cyclones couldn’t handle Bishop Newman’s offense. The Cyclones held Bishop Newman 0-1 in the first three innings. Towards the end of the game, Bishop Newman rattled off multiple runs, and the Cyclones couldn’t defend Bishop Newman’s offense.
Assistant Coach Jen Dietrich said, “The girls played hard against one of the top-rated programs in the state, but we just couldn’t string any hits together. We made plays defensively but in the end, just couldn’t score runs. You can’t win ball games without scoring and that was our downfall, Overall, though, our defense was solid and we had a good showing in the circle".
The score of the second game, against Wayne, was 4-7. The Cyclones started off the game with Jayden Ratzloff scoring a home run. The game started off in the Cyclones’ favor, but in the second and third innings, Wayne went on a run, making it hard for the Cyclones to catch up. The Cyclone's best efforts were not enough to earn the win against Wayne.
“I feel that we played well and grew as a team. Playing the top two teams in the state isn’t always easy, but we kept our heads high. We will be ready to compete with more competition later this week,” said Rylee Olson, a senior at Leigh High School.
When asked about the Wayne game, assistant coach Jen Dietrich said, “I was super proud of our girls both defensively and offensively against Wayne. We talked during pre-game about the plan in the batter's box and on defense, and the girls did an excellent job of making adjustments during the game. We put the ball in play and had some really good at bats. In the end, we were able to get bases loaded and put pressure on their defense but weren’t able to capitalize. The girls did a great job but just fell short.”
