Cyclones Take Third in Pierce Tourney

By: Leah Pinkston, a freshman at Leigh High School

On Saturday, September 19, 2020, the HWY 91 Cyclones fought softball teams from South Sioux City, O’Neill, and Pierce in the Pierce Invite, and came away with a third-place finish!

For the South Sioux City game, HWY 91 Cyclones scored six runs in the beginning, which ultimately led to an 11-3 victory over South Sioux City.

The big inning was thanks to singles by Lilly Praest and Sophia Dvorak, a home run by Sasha Perrin, and a double by Rylee Olson. HWY 91 collected 12 hits. Dvorak, Olson, Kyleigh Rayback, and Ratzlaff all had multiple hits for the Cyclones.

As far as the O’Neill match goes, it’s clear to see that it was a pretty tough game for HWY 91. It came down to the last play, but HWY 91 Cyclones were on the losing end of a 9-10 defeat to O’Neill. Unfortunately, O’Neill had 13 hits on the way to victory. The Cyclones racked up 11 hits. Perrin, Ratzlaff, Lilly Praest, and Abbey Pieper all collected multiple hits for the Cyclones. HWY 91 Cyclones didn't commit a single error in the field, but it wasn’t enough to get the win that would have led to the Cyclones playing in the championship.

As a result, the Cyclones wound up in the consolation game against Pierce. HWY 91 Cyclones beat the visiting Pierce Bluejays softball squad by a final score of 14-0, which left the Blue Jays record at 4-15.

The Cyclone record stands at 11-8 after this weekend!
