A Different Reason for the Season

By: Makenna Held, a junior at Leigh High School

Christmas will look different for everyone around the nation this year. Financially, families may be in a pinch or under a strict budget, and gift giving might not be like it usually is.

But does it really matter? To me, the true meaning of Christmas isn’t what is found under the tree or in a stocking. Instead, it is a bigger and more profound picture.

The real and true meaning of Christmas is spending time with the people we love and rejoicing because of our Savior’s birth.

Each year Americans spend roughly $2,000 on Christmas presents. This year, the projection is slightly less, but we are still ringing in a large quantity of money. This is because of COVID and all of the things that come with it, such as loss of jobs and pay reduction, of course. B maybe less money spent on gifts is not such a terrible thing.

We can all agree presents are great. Who doesn’t love them? But they don’t show the real reason for the season. Spending time with the people you love is better than any gift you can receive or give. You can show your friends and family you care about them in ways that presents cannot. Rejoice because of Jesus’s birth and because of health and goodwill and peace. Rejoice because of what you have rather than what you don’t have. Your family and friends will remember memories way more than they will remember any of the gifts they receive.

Maybe the circumstances we are all in will give more people a taste of the real magic of Christmas. The only things we should really worry about giving this season are love, joy, and peace. We should celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus and show the people we love how much we care about them. If gift giving isn’t at the top of your priority list this December, don’t fret. Remember that the reason for the season isn’t what is under the tree, but rather who is around it that matters.
