Patriots Net the Monarchs

By: Dee Rivera, a sophomore at Leigh High School

The Patriot girls’ and boys’ varsity basketball teams both picked up wins against David City Aquinas!

Both teams were supposed to play the Monarchs on January 5, but the boys’ game had to be postponed until January 19 due to Covid-19 concerns.

On the girls’ side, the JV began the night with a 17-41 loss.

But the Varsity girls dominated with a 44-25 win on the road.

After leading 22-17 at halftime, the varsity girls never looked back.  They came out with an explosive third quarter and held the Monarchs to just 2 points.

Senior Alissa Kasik said, "We really locked down defensively and shut them down. With execution and teamwork, it all made for a great win."

Head Coach Murren said, "The team played a great game defensively, and we were able to adapt to their game plan, which allowed us to have success. They tried to slow the game down on us a little bit, but we dug our heels in defensively to play fundamental defense through their long possessions. Offensively we did a good job of executing and getting good looks in the paint. It was great to see the kids adapt and adjust to their game plan and still play our style of basketball."

In the win, freshman Chloe Hanel led the team with 13 points.  Senior Cassidy Hoffman made offense happen with 9 assists.  She also put up 6 points of her own and recorded 9 rebounds on the night.

Fast forward to the 19th, and the boys were in action.

The JV boys struggled greatly, losing their game 17-60.

But the varsity boys finished the night strong against a solid C-1 Monarch team. They beat Aquinas by 4 points with the final score of 50-46.

The Patriots outscored David City 24-16 in the first half.  Then they came out after halftime and put up 14 points in the third, but were outscored in the fourth as the Monarchs made a final push.

But the Patriots held on for the 50-46 win.

Senior Trevor Zulkoski said, “I thought we showed up and played a great game. They were a good team and that was a great win to get.”

Eli Hays led the team with 19 points in the win.  Carter Hanel grabbed 11 boards.

“I was very proud of our effort,” Head Coach Bachman said. “We played our tails off and picked up a big-time win. This was a great team effort.”

This win brings the Patriot boys’ season record to 7-5
