Patriot Girls Give Coach Murren His 100th Win!

By: Sage Fernau, a freshman at Leigh High School

In two nights of back-to-back games, the high school girls’ basketball team played outstanding games in Genoa against Twin River, on January 21 and in Norfolk against Lutheran High Northeast on January 22, adding two more notches to their season win tally this year!

In both games, the Pats took a commanding lead early.  After shutting out Twin River in the first quarter, they held LHNE to just two points!  In both of these games, the Pats scored 16 in the first.

Against Twin River, the second half scoring was a little more balanced as the Pats gave a lot of players a lot of playing time.  The final score ended 65-33 in a great team-effort win.

Freshman Chloe Hanel led the scoring with 18.  Senior Kayden Schumacher and junior Kennedy Settje both posted double-doubles as Settje put up 14 points and 11 rebounds and Schumacher recorded 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Coach Matt Murren said, “The girls did a very nice job defensively in the first quarter getting stops on a team that loves to shoot the 3. We did a great job of rebounding and getting into transition and finding good looks. It was a nice road win and an opportunity for a lot of girls to play.”

The next night against LHNE, the Patriots led another balanced attack, with each player doing her part.

Senior Alissa Kasik paced the offense with 2 three-pointers and 13 total points.  Hanel added 9 points and 10 rebounds, and Schumacher put up 9 points and 8 rebounds. Senior Cassidy Hoffman added 7 points and 9 rebounds as well.

Coach Mr. Murren said, "We put together our best defensive team performance of the year in limiting Lutheran High to tough shots. Our communication on that end of the court was great, and it allowed us to work together as a unit in getting stops. The first 12 minutes offensively we really were able to push the ball and get out into transition, allowing us to get shots at the rim and from the perimeter. It was a great overall team win."

Both of these games were extra special to the Patriots because head coach Murren, who has coached the Patriots for 8 years, earned his 100th win career win against Twin River!  This was celebrated at the Lutheran High game in Leigh the next night.

Senior Cassidy Hoffman said, “Mr. Murren is one of the best coaches I’ve ever had.  He pushes us to be our best and always believes in us.  Not only is he a great coach, but he is a great person too.  He is always supportive and understanding of what is going on in each of our lives.  We could not ask for a better coach, and we all wish him congrats on his 100th win!”
