Student Opinion Column: Leading by Example
By: Kayden Schumacher, a senior at Leigh High School
Today, many individuals strive to be leaders, whether it is in school, on the court, or on the field, in a club, or in the workplace. Our teachers and parents are constantly encouraging us to be leaders and to act the way a leader would act. But what does this exactly mean?
Leadership means to lead a group of people. Leaders are people that other individuals look up to and strive to emulate. A good leader possesses guidance and direction.
To me, the stereotypical leader isn’t afraid to give his or her opinion. They might be outgoing and sometimes, even a bit bossy, if it is necessary in a specific situation. However, I think some of the most reserved and introverted people in the world can make great leaders too, but they have to walk the walk.
An individual does not need to be outgoing in order to possess leadership. I think leading by example is one of the best forms of leadership. Leading by example is much better than making huge attempts to recruit followers, like some individuals try to do.
Leading by example creates a picture of what is possible to others, without bragging or making posts about it. Leadership is significantly more beneficial when it shows others how to push for greatness themselves.
True leaders do not “whip others into shape” or “show someone all the things they are doing wrong.” A great leader shows people the right way to do things without forcing them to do it. They lead by example, and don’t force others to do things.
Overall, I think leading by example is the best way to lead a team or people in the workplace. When a person leads by example, they show the correct way to act, without bossing people around or making their voice overwhelmingly heard. A clear image is created for others to follow.
This is why I think leading by example is the best form of leadership.
