Miller Advances to State Speech Competition!

By: Aubrie Hanna, a freshman at Leigh High School

March 9 was a big day for the Leigh Speech Team, and they were successful overall! The District D2-2 speech competitions were held in Newman Grove, and eight schools were in attendance.

Six LHS speech competitors were finalists. Freshman Taya Hambleton received sixth place in Informative Speaking, and freshman Aubrie Hanna placed sixth in Poetry.

Three competitors were just one rank away from qualifying for state.  Senior Emily Loseke earned fourth place in Informative Speaking, freshman Tanyn Larson placed 4th in Persuasive Speaking, and freshman Leah Pinkston received fourth place in Humorous Prose.

Aiden Miller was awarded with third place in the poetry division, which qualified him for the state competition in Kearney!

The speech team had 78 points overall, which put them at fifth place.

Aiden, the LHS state-bound speaker, said, “I really enjoyed the meet. There were lots of friendly people, and I had fun competing.  I am excited to represent our team at State.”

The team’s coach, Ms. Shelby Paprocki, said, “It was a very successful day at Newman Grove. Having almost everyone place, and having one state qualifier was awesome.”
