Large, Young Boys’ Golf Team Competes at First Meet

By: Morgan Bunner, a freshman at Leigh High School

The Clarkson-Leigh Patriot golf team participated in their very first outing of the year on a chilly, blustery day on March 29 in Beemer at the Indian Trails Country Club.

This was a varsity-only meeting, and the five varsity golfers who participated in this meet were juniors Gavin Novotny, Isaac Rodenburg, and Noah Holoubek; along with sophomores Jackson Mullenhoff and Mason Whitmore.

The rest of this year’s 15-member team includes freshmen Ryan Brichacek, Mic Sayers, James Grotelueschen, Simon Wemhoff, Carter Timm, Morgan Bunner, Jack Brabec, Christian Hamernik; and sophomores Jace Indra and Dalton Zulkoski.

The meet consisted of 13 teams, and the Patriots competed against Battle Creek, BRLD, Tri-County NE, GACC, Hartington-Newcastle, Humphrey/LHF, Pender, Schuyler, Wisner/Pilger, Wayne, Winnebago, West Point-Beemer and West Point-Beemer JV.

Junior golfer Rodenburg wasn’t pleased with the Patriot’s showing at this first meet.

“The Beemer meet was windy and miserably and everyone thought they shot terribly,” Rodenburg said.

In this first outing, the Patriots placed 8th as a team with a combined score of 458.  Wayne High won the meet with a 360 combined score.  Rounding out the top three teams were West-Point Beemer and Battle Creek.

The team is coached this year by Mr. Andrew Faltys and assisted by Mike Meyer.

“The wind was a huge factor in today’s meet,” Faltys said, “and out of the 5 that competed, it was Jackson and Mason’s first time competing and Noah’s first time at Beemer! It’s a difficult course, especially for the first meet. We have things to work on and will continue to work hard and improve throughout the season!”
