Cadwallader and Wendt Earn Top Awards at Conference Art Show!

By: Leah Pinkston, a freshman at Leigh High School

On Wednesday, April 14, the Leigh art students sent 60+ pieces of work to the East Husker Conference Art Show.  The event was held at the Nielsen Center in West Point, and it was a huge success for the Leigh students.

Students’ 7th Grade portraits have to wait to be entered until a student begins ninth grade, but even so, Leigh had several seventh-grade portraits that won awards. Along with the awards from past portraits, Leigh brought home 25 ribbons in total.

Ranked from lowest to highest were nine white ribbons, twelve red ribbons, three blue ribbons, and two purple ribbons.

The purple ribbons, the highest ribbon a piece of art can earn in the show, were awarded to junior Cortlynn Cadwallader and sophomore Korbee Wendt.

Wendt’s purple ribbon portrait of “A Woman in Thought” was honored at the show and given high praise from the judges. This was quite an honor, as only the best of each show (six of the other works) were talked about by the judges.

Cadwallader, whose portrait was titled “Grandma,” said, “My favorite thing about making this piece was doing the beads on my grandma’s shirt. I started sometime around the beginning of the school year, and I was extremely excited getting the purple ribbon. I worked so hard, for so long, and it was great that my work paid off.”

Earning the three blue ribbons were senior Layne Krutz, sophomore Albert Diaz, and freshman Sage Fernau.

“It was a great show; much better than last year, especially since we didn’t actually have one due to Covid,” Leigh and Clarkson art teacher Mrs. Ann Cerv said.
