Patriots Beat the Competition at Elite Norfolk Classic Meet

By: Korbee Wendt, a sophomore at Leigh High School

For the Patriot track team this season has seemed like it has been one win after another.

A handful of Patriot competitors competed at the Norfolk Classic on April 29 in Norfolk. Only the best of the best track athletes of the area schools are invited to compete at this meet that is often noted for being as competitive as the state track meet.

There was a lot of tough competition, but the Patriots battled hard and did an amazing job.  Notably, the Clarkson-Leigh girls proved they are the fastest sprinters in the area.

Highlights from this meet include freshman Chloe Hanel setting three records in High Jump, 100M Hurdles, and 300M Hurdles, and senior Emily Loseke setting two records in the 100M Dash and 200M Dash.

Hanel placed first in the 100M hurdles, and Loseke brought home gold in the 100M Dash. The girls 4x100M Relay team including Loseke, Hanel, McKenna Stodola, and Tanyn Larson captured gold as well.

“Going to the Norfolk Classic was a great opportunity for me,” freshman Tanyn Larson said. “It was such a fun atmosphere and a great experience to be able to go my freshman year.” In addition to the 4x1 Relay, Larson also competed in the 100M Dash.

The Norfolk Classic is one of my favorite meets to watch our athletes compete,” Track Coach Briana Wietfeld said.  “The Classic 2021 was a success. I am so proud of these athletes' hard work and dedication. They came to compete, and many Patriot records were tied or broken!”
