Cyclones Finish Runner-Up at O’Neill Tourney

By: Sydney Reeves, a junior at Leigh High School

Being over halfway through the busy season, the Cyclones traveled a long way to O’Neill on Saturday, September 18, and had a game on their home field in Dodge against David City Aquinas on Tuesday, September 21.

Highway 91 started the day off in O’Neill with a short game against the West Point Beemer Cadets. The Cyclones came prepared and ready to play. Scoring 15 runs in the first inning, the Cyclones won 15-3 in the third inning.

The second game of the day the Cyclones started off strong again, developing 11 runs in the first two innings. They defeated the Pierce Bluejays in three innings with a score of 12-0.

The last game of the day for the Cyclones was another great game, but definitely higher-caliber competition than the first two games, as they were in the championship. The game was tied going into the third inning, where Central City scored one run.

The Cyclones weren’t able to gain another run the rest of the game to walk away with first place. The ending score was 3-4 in a very tight game all throughout. The Highway 91 Cyclones earned second place at the O’Neill tournament.

On Tuesday, September 21, the Cyclones were back at it again in Dodge against David City Aquinas. The Cyclones held on in a close game of 5-2 until the last inning where Aquinas scored another four runs. The Highway 91 Cyclones weren’t able to get their bats rattling and unfortunately lost with a score of 3-9.

This brings the Cyclones’ record to 15-7.   We wish the Cyclones the best of luck for the rest of their season!
