Patriots Continue to Pile on Wins

By: Makenna Held, a senior at Leigh High School

The Patriot Volleyball team made a long drive up to High Plains on Thursday, September 16, to take on the Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family Bulldogs and High Plains Storm in a triangular. The following Tuesday, September 21, the Patriots played Twin River in Leigh for Parents’ Night.  All three of these matches resulted in wins.

In the triangular on the 16th, the first game was against High Plains. The Patriots came out hot against the Storm and aced them multiple times as well as defended well and put up a great offense. High Plains took an early timeout, and another later in the game, but they couldn’t defend the hot-handed Patriots, The Patriots won the first set 25-10.

Hoping for a better second set, the Storm played a little bit scrappier and had some tougher serves, but they were nothing compared to the Patriots. The Patriots won easily, 25-12.

The second game immediately after the first would be the Patriots against Humphrey- Lindsay. The Bulldogs would be tougher competition, and the Patriots were fully aware. They came out with their game faces on and played outstanding scrappy defense, followed with smart ball placement and multiple kills. The first set finished out 25-17.

The next set, the Bulldogs were ready to give it their all. They picked up nearly everything the Patriots put down, and served aggressively. The Patriots battled, but came up short in a very close set with the final score 24-26.

The last and final set of the night the Patriots knew they would have to give it everything they had left to defeat the hungry Bulldogs. It started off close, each team alternating earning points. Finally, the Patriots started to pull away. The Bulldogs fought back though. Soon the score was tight again, but the Patriots wouldn’t give up. They pushed a quick five points after reaching 20, and ended the match 25-20.

Korbee Wendt, junior, said, “The triangular in High Plains was overall a fun night. We started out with High Plains and then played HLHF and had a big win in three sets. It was a loud atmosphere which always helps as well. Can't wait to take on the rest of the season!”

After a tournament over the weekend, the Patriots were back in action again on September 21 against Twin River for Parents’ Night.  The Patriots had already trounced the Titans over the weekend in tournament action, and tonight was no different.

The C and JV teams also picked up wins on the night.

The varsity then came out swinging, making quick work of the Titans 25-9, 25-4, 25-11. Many different players saw some court time.

This brings the Patriots’ record to 13-1.
