By: Kanyon Held, a senior at Leigh High School

The Clarkson-Leigh Patriots hosted the Stanton Mustangs in Leigh on September 21, 2021, for a week for matchup. The 4th-ranked Mustangs came into the game with a record of 3-0 and the Patriots came into the game with a record of 2-1.

The Mustangs reached the end zone first, scoring off a 3-yd rushing touchdown. Stanton put in the two-point conversion, taking the lead in the first quarter. After going back and forth, the Patriots got on the board next in the second quarter. Eli Hays punched in a 1-yd rushing touchdown. Hays threw a screen to Kyle Kasik on the two-point conversion, making the score 8-8 going into halftime.

Stanton added to their total in the third quarter after Brayan Acuna ran in a 4-yd rushing touchdown. The Mustangs were successful on the two-point conversion, going up 16-8 going into the 4th quarter.

The Patriots were unable to reach the endzone in the 4th quarter. Stanton, however, reached the end zone one more time after Acuna rushed for another 28-yd rushing touchdown. The Mustangs were unsuccessful on the two-point conversion, making the final score 22-8 Mustangs.

When asked about the game, Coach Jim Clarkson said, “Tough loss to a good team, hopefully we will learn from this game and get better.”

Sophomore Dylan Higby said, “We came out kind of slow and turned the ball over a lot, but as the game went on we got better and played tough.”
