Clarkson-Leigh Upsets O-C, Loses in HD Rematch

By: Kammy Held, a freshman at Leigh High School

The Patriots hosted their annual varsity volleyball tournament on Saturday, October 2, 2021. The pool of play was extremely competitive, with many top teams in the state in attendance.

For the Patriots, the day consisted of playing Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family, Oakland- Craig, and Howells- Dodge. The Patriots earned two wins, including an upset win over Oakland, but sadly couldn’t pull through in the championship game against the Jaguars.

To start off the morning, the Patriots played Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family. The Patriots brought a lot of energy and fantastic defense, pulling through and winning both sets ending with 25-16, and 25-15.

In this game, Chloe Hanel contributed 12 kills and 11 digs.  Sophomore Tanyn Larson added 8 kills of her own.  Kennedy Settje led the team in digs with 13, and Makenna Held recorded 23 set assists.

In the second game of the day, the Patriots played a highly-ranked Oakland-Craig. The Patriots looked sensational in this game, stunning the Knights in two sets. Kennedy Settje led the match with 9 kills and Hanel led with 15 digs. The Patriots ended the game with 25-18, 25-21.

The last game of the day was a rematch against the Howells-Dodge Jaguars, and it ended in devastating fashion for the Patriots. The Patriots just couldn’t get a solid lead at any point in the game. The Patriots did some great things, but couldn’t stop the Jaguars leaving the score 22-25, and 19-25.

Despite the loss to the Jaguars, the Patriots still finished in second place against extremely competitive teams!

Senior Makenna said, “It was fun, as usual, to host our own home tourney. We really came out the first two games, beating HLHF and the number one seed, Oakland-Craig. It was exciting to do so well, even though we fell short to Howells-Dodge. They played well and we couldn’t get enough blocks up to shut down their outside hitter. Overall it was a good day and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds!”

Head Coach Becky Schneider agreed with Held: “Our tournament was stacked with ranked teams so coming out of that with a 2nd place finish was awesome!  The girls played hard and battled it out with some really great, competitive teams!  Even with a loss, we are able to learn from it and continue to get better!”

This tournament brings the Patriots’ record to 18-3!
