Patriot Junior High Volleyball Wins Battle for Highway 91

By: Brynn Settje, a freshman at Leigh High School

Bump, set, hit, and hustle is what the JH A team did to win their tournament on Saturday, September 11. The B team put up a good fight as well.

It was an A-team tournament, but our B-team also participated in the tournament as well since we were the host school. The A team earned 1st place and the B-team finished 6th.

The other teams that played in the tournament were Stanton, Humphrey St. Francis, Humphrey Lindsey Holy Family, and Howells-Dodge.

The A team first started off the tournament playing Howells-Dodge. They brought them to 3 sets and ended up winning. The final scores were 12-25, 25-10, and 15-13.

The second game they played Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family. They won in 2 sets with the final scores being 25-14 and 25-17.

For the championship game, they ended up playing Stanton. They took Stanton to three sets and won it all. The final scores ended up being 23-25, 25-6, and 15-11.

Vylet Hollatz, 7th grader at Leigh said, “If you work and play hard, success should hopefully follow. We feel like we have worked hard this season so far, and it paid off when we earned the 1st place trophy.”

The B team also battled hard throughout the day.  In their first game against Stanton, they lost 15-25 and 19-25.

In their second game against Humphrey St. Francis, they won the first set 25-16, but lost the second two 10-25 and 12-15.

In the final game, they matched up with Humphrey/LHF.  Again, they took them to 3 sets, but lost in the end 20-25, 25-23, and 7-15.

Mrs. Brianne Bachman, junior high coach, said Bachman quotes, “The A team played well and was able to come away at the end of the day undefeated and champions! The B team placed 6th but played against all other A teams. It was really fun to see them go 3 sets with Humphrey/Lindsay and St. Francis. I thought many of the girls really started coming out of their shell and playing with confidence. It was fun to watch them play a day full of volleyball and win some of their sets. The coaches can’t wait to see continued growth at all levels throughout the rest of the season!
