Patriots Reach 20 Wins!

By: Brynn Settje, a freshman at Leigh High School

Serve aggressively, pass effectively, talk profusely, and hit HARD!

This was the Patriots’ game plan to beat the Shelby-Rising City Huskies and Lutheran High Northeast Eagles in a triangular match-up on October 5, 2021, in Leigh.

The game plan definitely worked, as the Patriots dominated both games!

The Patriots first started the triangular off by playing Shelby-Rising City. After a slow start against Shelby, they fired up and fired back.  The final score of the first set ended up 25-17.

“The SRC match was a little slower paced than what we are used to, but we were able to push through and finish!” Head Coach Becky Schneider said.

After a short break, the Patriots had one thing on their minds and that was to finish the game with a win. The Patriots wanted the score of the second match to be a little bit better than the first set, so they took it to them. The final score of this game was 25-12.

Next up was Lutheran High.  The Patriots were determined to beat them after the loss last year. They knew that it was going to be a hard match. They came in with the right mindset to go after every ball no matter what.

The Patriots started off staying with the Eagles, which made the score close during the middle of the game. They knew that they had to play hard in order to take this set and win. LHNE started to make mistakes, and the Patriots capitalized, winning the first set 25-19.

For the second set, the Patriots took the moment with them and started the game off. The Patriots had to push hard and have the right mindset in order to win. They knew that it was going to be hard to take the second set too. They played really hard and went after everything, which led them to win the second set 25-22.

“Coming out of our triangular with two wins was awesome!” Schneider said.  “Our match with LHNE was solid!  Once we started to play with a little bit of fire, we started to string things together and win some big rallies, which gave us all the momentum!!  We are very proud of the girls' efforts and being able to stay mentally tough, especially when the match got close!  It was a big win, and it's awesome to see these girls succeed this season!”

This season for the varsity team has been going great! The Patriots' record is now 20-3.

Sophomore Gracie Eisenmann said, “Coming into the triangular, we were ready to play. We started out a bit slow against Shelby-Rising City, but we ended up coming out with a win. In the game against LHNE, we came out strong and finished strong. I am proud of the way we played that night.”
