FFA Members Attend National Convention

By: Carter Brabec, a freshman at Leigh High School

Eight Leigh FFA members headed to the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 28-30 for the National FFA Convention and Expo. They left Nebraska late Tuesday night, and they started the long trip by bus.

Opening ceremonies began Thursday morning. There were also sessions throughout the day, and numerous speakers talked about the importance of FFA. After the open ceremony was over, chapter members headed to another building filled with vendors.

Dances were held both Thursday and Friday night, and the Leigh chapter members had the chance to meet kids from other Nebraska chapters and chapters across the country.

On Friday students traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to tour Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. They were able to view the track and watch a movie about the track. They also toured Louisville Slugger, the company that manufactures baseball bats for the Major League, as well as a retired horse farm. On Saturday morning, the group began the trip home.

Senior Audie Tejkl said, “It was an honor to get to go to National FFA. The convention even gave opportunities for colleges that are outside of the state that we may not get at our state college fairs. I hope that this opportunity is given to students for years to come, as it is a worthwhile experience.”
