Leigh Students Attend Manufacturing Day Event

By: Aiden Miller, a senior at Leigh HIgh School

In the month of October, Leigh students had an opportunity to attend Manufacturing Day, an event sponsored by Central Community College. Those who attended were Aiden Miller, Audie Tejkl, Isaac Rodenburg, and Kevin Becerril.  Bryce Jurgensen from Clarkson also attended with the group.

The day started off with a tour of Timpte Inc, in David City. They got to walk through the floor and were given explanations about what goes on to build Timpte trailers, how they do it, and what students could do to come work at Timpte.

Next on their schedule was a walk-through of some of the main manufacturing classes at CCC, with a surprise visit from the criminal justice department at the end of the day. During their visit at CCC, they got to talk to representatives from BD Pharmaceuticals and were told about opportunities that BD offers.

After walking through the college, they went to CCS, Central Confinement Services, and had a walk through. The tour guides explained exactly what they do there, which includes building livestock confinements as well as commercial products. They were shown how the parts were made and even given a demonstration on how their new laser works. At the end of their presentation, they allowed some kids to run a welding bead. Kevin, Aiden, Calvin, and Bryce ran beads before they ran out of time.

Senior Isaac Rodenburg said “It was a great experience and we learned about many great opportunities in the manufacturing field”

At the end of the day, they went to Behlen's Manufacturing and were given a water bottle, an oral presentation, and then they had an activity. The activity included walking through booths and meeting with representatives from each department about what that department did and what opportunities the seniors had.

Ms. Cerv, the guidance counselor at Leigh, who chaperoned the trip, said, “It was a full day learning about the common misconceptions about manufacturing and promoting the skills and careers that are needed in the manufacturing industry! The seniors did a great job asking questions and learning more about the opportunities they have after high school!”
