Disappointing Start to BB Season as Boys and Girls Fall to Bulldogs
By: Sage Fernau, a sophomore at Leigh High School
In a packed gym in Leigh for the first game of the season, the Patriot boys’ and girls’ JV and Varsity basketball teams did battle against Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family on Friday, December 3rd. In a rare occurrence, all four Patriot teams’ efforts resulted in losses.
After a loss from the JV girls, the varsity girls started off the game strong, scoring 15 points in the first quarter. But they could not keep this up, scoring just 8 points to the Bulldogs’ 12 in the second quarter, down 23-26 at halftime. In the second half, the game remained very tight, but the Patriots just couldn’t gain a comfortable lead. The final result was a home loss, 48-52.
This was despite a tremendous effort from Chloe Hanel and Kennedy Settje. Hanel put up 21 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals. Settje contributed 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists.

The boys’ team did not fare any better, unfortunately. The Bulldogs came into the game as the defending state champions, and they took a commanding lead early on and never looked back. By halftime the score was 17-30, and the final was 31-61 in favor of the Bulldogs. The Patriots were never able to score 10 points in any of the four quarters.
Jared Novotny led the team with 12 points and 6 rebounds.
