Girls Basketball Looks to Build on Last Year’s Success

By: Isaac Rodenburg and Aiden Miller, seniors at Leigh High School

The Patriot girls’ basketball team is looking forward to another great season!

Last year’s incredible season that saw them end their regular season 20-1 after being ranked many weeks at No. 1. After that sensational season, their hopes were dashed by back-to-back playoff losses in the sub-district final and district final games, leaving them hungry for more this year.

They lose a lot of experience from last year, but look to fill spots left by last year’s seniors to have another great season that hopefully ends in Lincoln.

This year’s team is coached once again by Mr. Matt Murren.  He is assisted by Jennifer Remmereid, Rebecca Hiatt, and Kelsey Moore.

The girls started off their year by winning their jamboree game on November 30th against Wynot, 29-25.

The starters for the team thus far are seniors Kennedy Settje, a pre-season Columbus Telegram Super-Senior pick, Makenna Held, and Faith Indra; junior Korbee Wendt; and sophomore Chloe Hanel.

Held said, “The jamboree game was a great first opportunity for us to get out and play. We did some things well but we also saw lots of things we can work on. We are excited for our first game against Humphrey-Lindsey on Friday!”

Coach Matt Murren said, “The game against Humphrey/LHF is going to be a fun season opener. They are a well-coached team with 4 of 5 starters returning from last year and preseason rated 1. It’s the exact type of game you want to play at home in front of your own fans to start the year.”

In addition to the varsity starters, there are many girls on this year’s squad who hope to make this a successful season.  Making up the rest of the varsity are senior Bailie Graybill; junior Jessica Hoffman; sophomores Tanyn Larson and Gracie Eisenmann; and freshmen Cadence Indra, Brynn Settje, and Baylee Settje.

Rounding out the junior varsity are juniors Dee Rivera and Ella Kappel, sophomore Cassi Rayback; and freshmen Rylee Balzer, Izzy Hollatz, Brianne Kuhr, Kammy Held, and Makenna Hake.

This year’s student managers are Ava Kasik, Nevaeh Zulkoski, Karly Wendt, Vylet Hollatz, Chloe Indra, Carmen Malena, Reese Wietfeld, Daphne Jedlicka, Maizie Stoklasa, and Graicee Sortino.

Good luck to the girls this season!
