Win Over Jags Followed by Tough Loss to Vikings

By: Ella Urban, a freshman at Leigh High School

Patriot basketball faced off against two tough opponents on December 18 and December 21 to finish their season before the 5-day Christmas moratorium.

In the annual Highway 91 battle, the Patriot girls’ basketball team had a rivalry match against Howells-Dodge in Howells on December 18 and came out successful.

But just three days later, their good fortune was thwarted by a close loss to the Lakeview Vikings.

In the Howells-Dodge game, the first quarter gave the Patriots some momentum, as they jumped out to a commanding 13-2 lead.  But the Jaguars didn’t just quit, outscoring the Patriots 8-12 in the second.

But the Patriots held on in the second half, closing the game with a 10-point victory, 43-33.

Against the Jaguars, sophomore Chloe Hanel had a stellar night, posting 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists.

Kennedy Settje, a senior at Leigh High School, said, “The Howells game was a big win for us. We always look forward to playing them, and it felt good beating them after coming off of a loss.”

But the victory lap would be short-lived.  In the Lakeview game, played in Leigh, the Patriots went through a first quarter that left them only 4 points short of a lead. In the second quarter Lakeview furthered their lead by 2 points.

The second half was a back-and-forth battle that saw the Vikings finish up by 3 in the end.  The final score was 31-34.

Settje said, “The Lakeview game really challenged us. We struggled to put the ball in the hoop against their defense.”

Settje led the team this game with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals. Makenna Held and Hanel chipped in 6 and 5 points respectively.

This brings the Patriot girls’ record to 4-3.
