Boys and Girls Both Win Holiday BBall Tournament!

By: Natalie Brabec and Brianne Kuhr

A late Christmas present came to Patriot fans as both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams won their respective holiday basketball tournaments held in Shelby-Rising City on December 27th and 28th!

On the 27th, both teams played the Shelby-Rising City Huskies.

On the girls’ side of things, Chloe Hanel scored 13 points for the Patriots’ victory. Clarkson Leigh won this game by 22 points, and the final score was 46-24.

The Patriot boys added to their impressive win streak by defeating the Huskies in similar fashion to the girls, 46-26.

This came after Clarkson-Leigh’s great defense held the Huskies to just 7 total points in the second half.

Senior Jared Novotny led the team with 17 points.

These wins secured both the boys’ and girls’ teams a spot in the championship game against Fillmore Central.

The championship was another easy victory for the girls’ team, 61-37.  This win improved the girls’ record to 6-3.

Senior Kennedy Settje said, “The Holiday Tournament was a good opportunity for us to get back on track, after a close couple of losses. It felt good to get back on the court and play again. We were able to close the year on a good note and build our confidence for future games.”

Settje gave the team 22 points in this championship win, and Hanel contributed 28.

“It was great to see us put together two very good games coming off of a break,” Head Coach Matt Murren said. Against Fillmore Central, we put together our best all-around game, and this should bring the girls confidence. It was fun to see us execute at such a high level on both ends of the court.”

The boys’ team was next up against the Fillmore Central Panthers.

This was a closer game for the Patriots from the game against Shelby the day before. Both teams started off slowly, with the score just 3-4 in favor of the Panthers at the end of the first quarter.  Then both teams found some momentum, but the Patriots showed how much they wanted the win, coming out on top, 40-30.

Novotny again led the team with 21 points.  Senior Carter Hanel pulled down 14 rebounds.

Junior Kyle Kasik said, “This tournament we definitely didn’t play perfectly, but we ended up with two wins and tournament champs. The boys’ basketball program hasn't won a holiday tournament in a while, and it will hopefully give us even more momentum for our upcoming games.”

These wins bring the boys’ record to 7-1.

Head Coach Jeff Bachman said, “I was very happy how we ground out two victories. We got a lot of contributions from several guys. Our team defense really stepped up. I am looking forward to see how much we can continue to grow as a team.”

Congratulations to both Patriot teams for the hard-fought victories!
