BBB Downs Knights, Wildcats

By: Isaac Rodenburg, a senior at Leigh High School

On Tuesday, December 7th, 2021, the Clarkson-Leigh Patriot boys’ basketball team had a very impressive win against the Oakland-Craig Knights. The Patriots beat the Knights in a home game in Clarkson, despite beginning the game down 9-17 at the end of the first quarter.

This was thanks to an explosive second quarter that saw the Patriots score 25 points and holding the Knights to just 8.  Senior Carter Hanel even had an electrifying dunk in this quarter that pumped everyone up before half.

The two teams were pretty evenly matched in the second half of the game, but the Knights just couldn’t overcome the huge second quarter of the Patriots.

The final score ended 59-54.

Senior Jared Novotny and junior Mason Whitmore led the team in scoring with 16 and 14 points respectively.  Kyle Kasik set up his teammates with 5 assists, and Hanel controlled the glass, pulling down 14 boards.

On Thursday of that same week, December 9th, the Patriots battled the Winside Wildcats in another home game, this time in Leigh.

This game blow-out 61-27 win for the Patriots saw a lot of guys getting in on the action.  Novotny led the Patriot offense with 26 points, but 11 different guys scored on the night.

Head Coach Mr. Jeff Bachman said, “These were two really good wins for our program. We got contributions from a lot of guys and got two important wins on our home floor”.

This brings the Patriot boys’ record to 3-1 to start the year.
